What is Indian Head Massage?

Indian Head Massage Like reflexology, Indian Head Massage is also a holistic therapy, which has its origins in the ancient Indian medicine, Ayurveda, or "science of life". It has been passed down through generations and is still part of every day life in India today.

History

In India family members practise it on each other to encourage good communication, mothers practise it on their newborn babies to calm them down and reinforce bonding. Indian Head Massage is often done in barbers' shops and even on street corners.

It was initially designed to improve hair condition as well as the condition of the skin on the scalp and face. When it was brought to the western world in the 1930's, Indian Head Massage was extended to include the upper back and arms, neck and shoulders.

As with reflexology, Indian Head Massage helps the body to balance itself and create a good harmony between its different organs. Depending on the different kinds of massage used in a treatment, the client can experience either a stimulating or soothing, revitalising or relaxing effect.
